UI GREEN METRIC World University Rankings

Universitas Indonesia (UI) initiated world university rankings in 2010, later known as UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, to measure campus sustainability efforts. It was intended to create an online survey to portray sustainability policies and programs for universities around the world.
We based the rankings broadly on the conceptual framework of Environment, Economy, and Equity. The ranking indicators and categories are intended to be relevant to all. We have designed the indicators and weightings to be as free of bias as possible. The work of collecting and submitting data is relatively straightforward and requires reasonable staff time. Ninety-five universities from 35 countries participated in the 2010 version of UI GreenMetric: 18 from America, 35 from Europe, 40 from Asia, and 2 from Australia. In 2020, 912 universities from
84 countries around the world participated. This shows that UI GreenMetric has been recognized as the first and only world university rankings on sustainability.
Our theme this year is “Universities, UI GreenMetric and SDGs in the Time of Pandemic”. We would like to focus on universities’ efforts to continue their sustainability programs and policies based on UI GreenMetric and SDGs while coping with Covid-19 pandemic.

Energy and Climate Change

(EC)

The university’s attention to the use of energy and climate change issues takes the highest weighting in this ranking. In our questionnaire we define several indicators , i.e. energy efficient appliances usage, renewable energy usage policy, total electricity use, energy conservation program, green building, climate change adaptation and mitigation program, greenhouse gas emission reductions policy.

Waste

Waste

(WS)

Waste treatment and recycling activities are major factors in creating a sustainable environment. The activities of university staff and students in campus will produce a lot of waste, therefore some programs and waste treatments should be among the concern of the university.

Water1

Water

(WR)

Water use in campus is another important indicator in Greenmetric. The aim is that universities can decrease water usage, increase conservation program, and protect the habitat. Water conservation program, piped water use are among the criteria.

Transport4

Transportation

(TR)

Transportation policy to limit the number of motor vehicles in campus, the use of campus bus and bicycle will encourage a healthier environment. The pedestrian policy will encourage students and staff to walk around campus, and avoid using private vehicle. The use of environmentally friendly public transportation will decrease carbon footprint around campus.

Education and Research

(ED)

This criteria is based on the thought that university has an important role in creating the new generation concern with sustainability issues.

Energy & Climate Change (EC)

Huachiew Chalermprakiet University strives to realize the use of additional energy saving appliances by paying close attention to efficient energy management in all parts of the organization.

We use the Building Management System (BMS) that entails using the Lighting Access Control system, which can control the lighting system outside the building from the control room, the auto light power on-off system, the surveillance with CCTV, and a BAS system for controlling Chiller etc. All these systems are controlled by a computer operating system.

Huachiew Chalermprakiet University has Solar Rooftop project to install solar panels on the roof of the Lecture building, Canteen, and Gymnasium. The total capacity is 44kW and within 12 months production capacity equals 3,583,180.80 kWh.

We are doing : Waste (WS)

Huachiew Chalermprakiet University (HCU) has identified one of six strategic issues of the university’s work plan for efficient, sufficient, and environmentally friendly university management in accordance with good governance principles. It has emphasized resource management, energy, and the environment by carrying out the activities for all relevant sectors to work together and create good awareness. Their activities could provide a good environment and make a good atmosphere both inside and outside the organization to reduce pollution and uptake the benefit the organization and society.

The waste management at HCU has been classified into three categories: organic waste, inorganic waste, and toxic waste. Waste management is carried out by following the process guidelines according to 3R principle: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Reduce means to minimize the amount of waste we create. Reuse refers to using items more than once. Recycle means putting the waste to a new use instead of throwing it away.

Our action : Water (WR)

Huachiew Chalermprakiet University has an aerated wastewater treatment system.  According to the wastewater treatment system operation plan, some amount of chlorine will be added to the treated wastewater in order to kill germs or remove harmful contaminants. Then it will be transferred and stored in the recycling wells before being pumped to be used for watering plants and lawns. The university will use 100% of all recycled water for watering the plants in the university.
